Sprinklers... does one kind work
best?
There are
many types and brands of sprinklers available. The three basic
categories differ in how far and how fast they apply
water.

Sprayheads:
-
Bodies
made of high strength, UV resistant plastic (or
brass.)
-
A variety of nozzles available for head
spacing of about 5 to 17 foot radius (in plastic or
brass)
-
A range
of pop-up heights (2", 3", 4", 6", and 12") for lawns,
groundcover, or shrubs
-
Nozzles can
also be used with adapters at on fixed height
risers
-
Filter below
nozzle keeps out clogging debris while letting water flow through
-
Cap seal
allows piston to rise and retract with little leakage
-
Stainless
steel spring causes piston to retract when not in
use.
Impact heads and
rotors:
-
Designed to
cover greater distances than spray heads, especially useful in
larger lawn or groundcover areas
-
Small rotors from 15 to 25 ft.
spacing
-
Medium
rotors from 25 ft. to 45 ft. spacing
-
Impact heads
- (i.e. traditional brass Rain Bird heads) driven by a spring
and lever
-
Rotors - driven by water flowing through internal
gears

Bubblers:
- Slow application
rate, but more than drip irrigation and less prone to
clogging
- Usually at the
base of individual plants, one bubbler per shrub, two or more per
tree
- Fixed or
adjustable rate of flow

The
key to effective watering is using the right kind of
sprinkler for the situation.
For
consistent coverage, never combine different sprinkler types
on the same line.
